About Dr. Ginsberg

Dr. Howard Ginsberg is a neurosurgeon and biomedical engineer at St. Michael’s Hospital, a leading teaching hospital at the University of Toronto. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Science, an MD, a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, and a Fellowship in Neurosurgery.

Dr. Ginsberg performs brain and complex spinal surgeries, treating conditions related to degenerative disease, trauma, and cancer involving the spine, spinal cord, and brain. He is the Chief of the hospital’s Spinal Surgery Program, which carries out more than 1,200 procedures each year.

Dr. Ginsberg is an advisor to the medicolegal community and works as a consultant for medical device companies and venture capital firms. He is actively engaged with multiple startup companies, both as an investor and as an advisor.

At the University of Toronto, Prof. Ginsberg is a faculty member in the Department of Surgery, with a cross-appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology. His research focuses on rapid cancer diagnosis using picosecond infrared laser ablation and mass spectrometry, combined with artificial intelligence.

He is also the Director of the International Fellowship Program, which has trained surgeons from 18 countries across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He has lectured and performed surgery across China and hosted 25 visiting surgeons through an observership program, and serves as Vice President of the Bethune Medical Development Association of Canada, a non-profit that promotes international cooperation with China in healthcare, education, and humanitarian work.

Outside the lab and operating room, Dr. Ginsberg is the neurosurgical consultant to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the world’s most valuable hockey team. He enjoys travelling, cycling, and playing polo.

The main structural moves: clinical practice leads, followed by his medicolegal/industry advisory work, then academic and research identity, then international leadership and outreach, and finally personal interests. I also folded the China-related activities together since they’re thematically connected. Let me know if you’d like any further adjustments.
